The Way we Talk to and About People with Diabetes: Why it Matters

The messages used in diabetes care are historically judgmental and shame/blame based. These messages have an impact on the way people with diabetes think about and care for themselves. This session will present the background and evidence for changing the way we speak to and about people with diabetes, including stories that highlight the problem, suggestions for change, and resources to help nurse practitioners make changes, communicate more effectively, and help their colleagues do the same.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

-As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to identify problem words in health care and ways to replace them with person-centered, strengths-based, and empowering messages.
- As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to locate resources to help them change their language/messages and share with colleagues.
-As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to self-report an increase in their ability to help patients and colleagues change their language.

Jane K. Dickinson, RN, PhD, CDCES

Program Director

Teachers College Columbia University

Jane K. Dickinson is a Program Director and Senior Lecturer at Teachers College Columbia University, where she oversees the master’s degree in diabetes education and management and teaches diabetes content. She also teaches in the doctoral program in Nursing Education and serves as a dissertation advisor.
Dr. Dickinson earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Connecticut in 2000, her Master of Science in Nursing from Yale University in 1993, and her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from St. Olaf College in 1990. Her research, publications, and presentations focus on the language of diabetes and the impact messages have on people living with diabetes.
Dr. Dickinson was Program Director and Diabetes Educator at her local hospital in Northwestern Colorado for 22 years. She received the Diabetes Educator of the Year Award in 2019 from the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, where she currently serves as President-Elect of the Board of Directors.
