This presentation will provide information necessary to improve healthcare professionals’ ability to identify veterans, military service members, and military connected family members in their practices. The presentation will provide an overview of PTSD and other invisible wounds, helpful screening tools, and special considerations when engaging with veterans and military connected family members seeking care, with the goal of increasing capacity for behavioral healthcare for this vulnerable population.

Louis Chow, PhD
Senior Director of Network Development and Training Institute
Home Base
Louis Chow, PhD, is the Senior Director of Network Development and Training Institute at Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Mass General Hospital program. He is a clinical psychologist, Assistant in Psychology at MGH, Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and specializes in the care of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other invisible wounds of war. Dr. Chow was recently appointed under Healy-Driscoll Administration to serve on the Veterans’ Home Council to ensure access to equitable, high quality competent care for Veterans across the well-being and safety of residents of MA-operated Veterans’ Homes.
Dr. Chow has overseen the education and training of thousands of clinicians and health professionals across the country seeking to care for veterans impacted by the invisible wounds of war. He has helped launch clinical programs in Florida and is supporting Home Base’s efforts to expand outreach and clinical care of historically excluded veterans. Dr. Chow is currently leading the development of new programs in Arizona.
Lauren Richards-Donegan, PhD
Director of Education and Training
Home Base
Lauren Richards-Donegan, PhD is the Director of Education and Training at Home Base and oversees the Training Institute. She is an Assistant in Psychology at MGH, and an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Richards-Donegan oversees the provision of online and in person education to mental health professionals, first responders, military connected family members, and health professionals that work with service members and their families. She also oversees all training programs within Home Base including pre-and post graduate trainees, and professional development for Home Base staff.
Dr. Richards-Donegan is a licensed clinical psychologist and provides individual evidence based treatment to post 9/11 veterans struggling with a range of invisible wounds of war. She is also a Cognitive Processing Therapy trainer and consultant. She has authored book chapters and peer reviewed journal articles related to increasing understanding of barriers to mental health treatment faced by veterans and enhancing community clinician access to training for empirically supported treatments.
