Pharmacotherapeutics of Inventive Injectables for Diabetes

This course focuses on injectable therapies for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Insulin may not always be the optimal initial injectable for individual patients with diabetes. This course reviews contemporary guidelines for diabetes care and uses case scenarios to illustrate situations where injectables can offer further disease management benefits.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe current clinical recommendations for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and insulins in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  2. Compare and contrast benefits and limitations of GLP-1 RAs and insulins used in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  3. Design an evidence-based treatment plan for an individual with type 2 diabetes mellitus and comorbidities.

Professor of Pharmacy at Wingate University School of Pharmacy

Jacqueline L. (Jacky) Olin, MS, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, FCCP is a Professor of Pharmacy at Wingate University School of Pharmacy and practices as an inpatient clinical pharmacy specialist at Novant Health Presbyterian Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Binghamton University, a PharmD from Rutgers University, and completed a PGY1 residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey. She has over 20 years of teaching experience with pharmacy learners, nurse practitioners, physicians, and other healthcare providers.  Recent publications by Dr. Olin have appeared in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, The American Journal of Health-Systems Pharmacy, Federal Practitioner, and the Journal for Nurse Practitioners.

To earn credits for this activity, you must complete all course components in the following order: 1) complete a three-question pre-test; 2) watch the course presentation video; 3) complete the course evaluation; 4) pass the post-test with a score of 2/3 (66.7%) or higher. You may retake the post-test until a passing score is achieved, at which point you will be able to view/print a copy of your certificate of completion.
