NONPF Module Three - Student Assessment

This (course/module) will help the learner develop and strengthen the knowledge and skills for assessing nurse practitioner students’ learning by providing effective assessment and feedback in both formative and summative evaluations.  Advice and strategies for developing well written test questions and exams to effectively assess knowledge and skills will be delivered.  The learner will gain an appreciation of the role of simulation and case studies for assessing knowledge, skills, and behaviors including diagnostic reasoning and communication skills. The role and responsibility of faculty in conducting site visits and evaluating clinical skills is reviewed.

Kathy Baldridge is a family nurse practitioner in Pineville, La. She is the director of psychometric analysis at Advanced Practice Education Associates, a nurse practitioner education company. She is a goal directed, results-oriented professional with a strong clinical background and education. Dr. Baldridge is the author of Coding & Billing in the Outpatient Clinical Setting: A quick guide and has authored and coauthored multiple journal articles and book chapters, including content in the 3rd and 4th editions of Clinical Practice Guidelines in Primary Care. In addition, she has served as an editorial reviewer for the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) for more than 4 years. She has presented numerous lectures and courses at the local, state, and national level. Dedicated to the advancement of Nurse Practitioners, she has served on the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners board of directors in various positions and is currently the president of the association.

She earned her ADN from Louisiana State University, Alexandria in 1993; her BSN (2006) and MSN (2009) from Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA; and her DNP from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa in 2013. Dr. Baldridge is the recipient of the AANP Award for Excellence and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2017. Passionate about caring for others, Dr. Baldridge remains in clinical practice serving the Central Louisiana area.

Betty Vicknair, MSN, APNP, PNP

Betty Vicknair, APRN, MSN, PNP, is the university and faculty consultant, integration specialist for Ascend Learning/APEA. She works closely with faculty to improve student readiness for certification and practice and spearheads the development and implementation of new learning resources. Over her distinguished 50-year nursing career she has obtained a wide range of knowledge, skills, and clinical experience focusing on NP practice and education. Betty has 25 years of clinical experience as a PNP and 8 years' experience as an assistant professor of nursing.  She has served on the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners Board of Directors and Executive Committee for close to 20 years. During that time, she served as Chair of the annual statewide conference for more than 10 years. She was responsible for budgeting, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, CE approval, and grant writing. Betty is the founder and current president of the Louisiana Nurse Practitioner Foundation (LNPF). Since its inception in 2015, she has raised more than $60,000 and has awarded more than $25,000 in advanced nursing scholarships. Through the LNPF she was also instrumental in funding medication assistance programs in several south Louisiana regions. Betty is the recipient of the Seymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009 and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners State Award for Nurse Practitioner Advocacy in 2016.

Kristine K. Browning, PhD, APRN-CNP, FAANP

Dr. Kristine Browning is the assistant dean for graduate clinical programs and an associate professor of clinical nursing at The Ohio State University College of Nursing.  Dr. Browning’s professional career began in 1999 as a certified adult nurse practitioner, providing care to oncology patients and continues to practice in cancer survivorship. She began her teaching career in 2012, and has taught across the nursing curriculum, now focusing on doctoral education and mentorship of doctoral students. Since 2015, Dr. Browning has been focused on APRN education leadership at OSU and during this time has been passionate about student clinical placement, appropriate preceptor recruitment, and the student experiential learning experience. Dr. Browning’s national program of research includes the examination of underlying determinants of tobacco use in order to further understand tobacco use behavior, including to whom providers deliver treatment and the development and testing of tobacco dependence treatment interventions among underserved or disadvantaged populations. Blending her clinical interest in oncology and training as a behavioral nurse scientist, Dr. Browning has also examined salient oncology survivorship issues such as preferences of cancer survivors and health care providers for treatment summary and survivorship care plans (TS/SCP), evaluating the accuracy of TS/SCPs and their literacy levels for patient and family use.

Leah Burt, PhD, APRN, ANP-BC

Dr. Leah Burt is a board certified Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.  She maintains an active clinical practice within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System's Department of Emergency Medicine and is a Clinical Assistant Professor as well as the Director of the AGPC-NP Program at the University of Illinois Chicago.  Dr. Burt's area of research expertise is mixed methodology educational research.  Specifically, she is interested in evidenced-based strategies to teach diagnostic reasoning, as well as experiential and simulation-based learning interventions.  Dr. Burt is currently a Fellow in Diagnostic Excellence with the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM), as well as a Simulation Scholar at University of Illinois College of Medicine's Simulation and Integrative Learning (SAIL) Institute.  Dr. Burt has published and presented her scholarship both nationally and internationally and is passionate about finding innovative, experiential ways to further diagnostic reasoning education.
