Cultivating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is not only the professional, ethical, legal, and moral responsibility of healthcare personnel, it is the cornerstone to justness in healthcare. The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) landmark report, Unequal Treatment, purports that because of provider bias and stereotypes, racial and ethnic minorities receive suboptimal healthcare and subsequently experience health disparities (IOM, 2003). Twenty years later, the same holds true. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the profound negative consequences of bias on the health and well-being of historically marginalized populations (CDC.gov, 2023). Bias contributes to health disparities among marginalized populations. Integration of DEI teaching strategies into learning experiences is critical to eliminating health-related consequences of bias and discrimination. Healthcare providers must analyze and synthesize the full breadth and depth of the impact of bias and discrimination on health outcomes. During this 1.0 hour education session, learners will be engaged through expert and dynamic presentation with Dr. Angela Richard-Eaglin, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, CDE.
