The emergence of genomics and precision medicine is sure to bring about seismic changes in healthcare delivery. This course will discuss the current state of genomic medicine and provide you with a basic genetic overview for use in critical analysis. Using case studies, this intriguing session will critically examine the expanding field of genomic medicine (including pharmacogenomics and use of biomarkers) and demonstrate how its integration into clinical practice may help to more precisely evaluate, diagnose, manage and prevent selected acute and chronic medical conditions. As well as addressing concerns about genomic medicine such as should you use them, how to order them, what to tell your patients and ethical concerns you may face.

Christine Kessler is an award-winning nurse practitioner, national/international speaker, prolific author, and clinical consultant specializing in General Endocrinology, Obesity, and Metabolic Medicine. During her 48 years of nursing (40 years in advanced practice) she has held diverse roles in management, research, academia (as assistant professor undergraduate and graduate nursing), and especially clinical practice; the latter as a critical care clinical specialist, an acute care nurse practitioner (as hospitalist & intensivist) and adult endocrinology nurse practitioner.
After 15 years as the senior nurse practitioner at a large hospital Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine, Christine now focuses on providing diabetes and general endocrine services, as well as weight-loss management, in rural Virginia. Christine has received numerous top medical clinical practice and patient satisfaction awards, including the Coin of Excellence personally awarded by the Surgeon General for having the highest patient satisfaction rating of all health care providers in the Army WORLDWIDE. Christine is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

To earn credits for this activity, you must complete all course components in the following order: 1) complete a three-question pre-test; 2) watch the course presentation video; 3) complete the course evaluation; 4) pass the post-test with a score of 2/3 (66.7%) or higher. You may retake the post-test until a passing score is achieved, at which point you will be able to view/print a copy of your certificate of completion.
