Creating an Obesity Treatment Plan in Primary Care

Obesity course description: In this 3 hour educational workshop, learners will be exposed to multiple aspects of diagnosing, treating, caring for, and preventing obesity among primary care patients. The workshop includes hands on activities, additional reading, and key practice tips such as identifying obesegenic medications and healthcare provider bias within the exam setting. The overall goal is to educate HCPs about the current issues related to obesity in order to promote advancement of care for patients nationwide.

Learning objectives


After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

• Accurately screen and appropriately apply differential diagnosis for earlier diagnosis and timely intervention of obesity and comorbidities
• Effectively assess and manage obesity as a chronic, serious, and progressive disease warranting early intervention and long-term care to minimize related comorbidities, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease across diverse patient populations
• Comprehensively manage obesity with both behavior and lifestyle modifications as well as the inclusion of pharmacotherapy, highlighting the safety and efficacy of available marketplace treatment option
• Address disparity gaps within practice while effectively integrating more cultural sensitivity to all patient visits

Christine Kessler is an award-winning nurse practitioner, national/international speaker, prolific author, and clinical consultant specializing in General Endocrinology, Obesity, and Metabolic Medicine. During her 48 years of nursing (40 years in advanced practice) she has held diverse roles in management, research, academia (as assistant professor undergraduate and graduate nursing), and especially clinical practice; the latter as a critical care clinical specialist, an acute care nurse practitioner (as hospitalist & intensivist) and adult endocrinology nurse practitioner.

After 15 years as the senior nurse practitioner at a large hospital Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine, Christine now focuses on providing diabetes and general endocrine services, as well as weight-loss management, in rural Virginia. Christine has received numerous top medical clinical practice and patient satisfaction awards, including the Coin of Excellence personally awarded by the Surgeon General for having the highest patient satisfaction rating of all health care providers in the Army WORLDWIDE. Christine is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Angela Golden, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP

Dr. Golden is the CEO, Chief Clinical Officer and Family Nurse Practitioner at NP From Home, LLC, in Munds Park, Arizona and NP Obesity Treatment Clinic in Flagstaff, Arizona. Dr. Golden earned her doctoral degree at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona.Dr. Golden is a member and fellow of American Association of Nurse Practitioners, where she served as past president and founding co-chair of the Obesity Specialty Practice Group/Community. She is a member and Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association and The Obesity Society.

Dr. Golden has presented at conferences regionally, nationally, and internationally. She is the author of several book chapters and books, including Treating Obesity in Primary Care. Her research has been published in periodicals including the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Education Today, Obesity, Population Health Management, and Postgraduate Medicine. Dr. Golden is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the 2024 AANP Sharp Cutting Edge Award, 2023 America’s Top NP Award, and 2021 Steelman-Seim Educator Award for Excellence in Academics from the Obesity Medicine Association.
