In the second episode of the Friends of NPACE Podcast Executive Director Terri Schmitt is joined by Christine Kessler, CNS, ACNP, ANP-C, BC-ADM, FAANP & Angela Golden, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP, FOMA to discuss obesity management in primary care. This discussion is aimed at helping educate HCPs on pathophysiology, interventions, medications, and barriers to care for this endocrine disorder to promote advancement of care for patients nationwide.

Christine is an award-winning NP, national/international speaker, prolific author, and clinical consultant specializing in General Endocrinology, Obesity, Metabolic, and Genomic Medicine. In her more than 4 decades of advanced nursing practice, she’s held diverse roles in academia (Assistant Professor in undergraduate & graduate nursing), research, and clinical practice; the latter as a critical care clinical specialist and ACNP intensivist (20 years) and an endocrine specialist (23 years). During her 16 years as a Senior NP at the Department of Endocrinology & Metabolic Medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, she established the first weight loss clinic at her military facility, within her Endocrine practice. Since then, Christine founded Metabolic Medicine Associates where she provides general endocrine services (in underserved locations) and weight-loss management, as well as endocrine consultation to healthcare providers nationally. Christine has received numerous top clinical practice and patient satisfaction awards, including the Fort Belvoir Hospital Department of Medicine’s Silver Ace award for being voted the top Medical Provider by her peers, and the rare Coin of Excellence personally awarded to her by the Surgeon General for having the highest patient satisfaction rating of all health care providers in the Army WORLDWIDE. Christine is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Angela Golden, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP

Dr. Golden is the past president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She is a current fellow of AANP and the Obesity Medicine Association. She owns NP Obesity Treatment Clinic in Flagstaff, AZ, where she provides evidence-based obesity treatment. She earned OMAs NP/PA Certificate of Advanced Clinical Education and the Specialist Certification of Obesity Professional Education, an internationally recognized certification. She graduated from NAU SON in 1998 with her MS/FNP.
Dr. Golden has a great deal of experience as a consultant in the development of patient education materials, has authored a book, Treating Obesity in Primary Care, several book chapters on obesity management, written several peer reviewed articles, participated in research, and been interviewed by lay media on obesity treatment. She presents nationally and internationally with an emphasis on obesity, health policy, leadership and clinical care.
The overall goal is to help educate HCPs about the current issues related to obesity in order to promote advancement of care for patients nationwide by increasing the number of health care providers that can:
(1) accurately screen and appropriately apply differential diagnosis for earlier diagnosis and timely intervention of obesity and comorbidities
(2) effectively assess and manage obesity as a chronic, serious and progressive disease warranting early intervention and long-term care to minimize related comorbidities, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease across diverse patient populations
(3) comprehensively manage obesity with both behavior and lifestyle modifications as well as the inclusion of pharmacotherapy, highlighting the safety and efficacy of available marketplace treatment option
(4) address disparity gaps within practice while effectively integrating more cultural sensitivity to all patient visits
(5) implement person-centered methods for evidence-based obesity management in the primary care setting

To earn credits for this activity, you must complete all course components in the following order: 1) watch the course presentation video; 2) complete the course evaluation; 3) pass the post-test with a score of 2/3 (66.7%) or higher. You may retake the post-test until a passing score is achieved, at which point you will be able to view/print a copy of your certificate of completion.
