Antibiotic resistance has been identified as a significant public health concern and can be linked to antibiotic misuse and overuse. To meet this challenge, clinician must keep up with evidenced based guidelines when diagnosing and treating infections. This knowledge is the foundation of antibiotic stewardship. The WHO and CDC identify antibiotic stewardship as the essential component to address this public health crisis. Antibiotic stewardship involves prudent antibiotic prescribing both from the prescriber perspective and from the level of healthcare systems. Prudent prescribing asks clinicians to employ responsible prescribing principles which includes applying evidenced based diagnostic criteria, appropriate selection of antibiotics and avoidance of unnecessary antibiotic prescribing. This interactive presentation will review these essential components of antibiotic prescribing and use cases to aid in application of the principles of antibiotic stewardship.
