Oh Sugar! The Basics of Insulin Management in Primary Care

The predominance of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes across the lifespan necessitate the primary care clinicians knowledge of when to start and how to manage insulin. This presentation will review pathophysiology of diabetes as a disease as well as differentials to consider when medication management fails. A review will be presented of diagnostic criteria to guide starting and dosage, choice of insulin, subjective and objective data to foster adjustment, barriers to insulin management in both patients and clinicians, and markers of success.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
-Review of the history and development of insulin as a treatment for hyperglycemia.
-Identify subjective and objective data to support starting and adjusting insulin regimens and consider differential diagnoses of hyperglycemia in primary care.
-Be able to make prescribing decisions regarding insulin.
-Articulate an understanding of health disparities, social, psychological, and physiological aspects of diabetes that affect insulin administration and diabetes management with insulin for both patients and clinicians.
Terri Schmitt

Dr. Terri Schmitt is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner and nurse educator, who has practiced extensively in family practice, pediatrics, endocrinology, and international health. She earned a diploma degree in nursing from St. John’s College of Nursing (now Southwest Baptist University), Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in nursing from Missouri State University, and a PhD in Nursing Science from University of Missouri Kansas City.
Dr. Schmitt has practiced nursing for over 27 years, and as a nurse practitioner for 22 years. She currently practices as a family practitioner and diabetes advisor at Galileo Health and as executive director of NPACE. Dr. Schmitt has published several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and speaks both locally and nationally. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Florida Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the Nurse Practitioner Council of Palm Beach County. Dr. Schmitt is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and has won numerous awards for practice, teaching, and leadership including two Daisy awards.
