This course provides a comprehensive overview of pacemakers, including their indications, types, and functionality. Participants will learn how to interpret device settings, recognize normal and abnormal rhythms, and troubleshoot common pacemaker issues. The course also covers patient assessment, monitoring, and education, empowering clinicians to optimize care for patients with pacemakers in both acute and outpatient settings.

I was raised in a small farming community in the central valley of California. I was the youngest of 3 siblings. All of my brothers and sisters were in medicine – my brother was a dentist and my sister a nurse. My father worked in a lab and my mother was a nurse. Both of my maternal grandparents were nurses. My wife is a nurse and has now obtained a DNP doctor of nurse practitioner from Chapel Hill, NC. Needless to say, I love nurses.
I obtained my undergraduate degree with a bachelors in Chemistry from a private liberal college in Northern California near Napa Valley – Pacific Union College. I then spent the next 11 years in Southern California at Loma Linda University – first attending medical school there and then doing Internal Medicine for 3 years and spent an additional year as a chief resident for Internal Medicine. This was followed by 3 years as a fellow in Cardiology. As a result, I love teaching and it has been a big part of my career as I come across students of medicine all the time in my current job. I go out of my way to teach as much as I can.
I am an interventional, non-invasive cardiologist, which means that I do Left Heart Caths, but do not perform stents or PCI procedures. I was always interested in pacers when I trained and have learned how to perform all manner of device procedures. These include traditional pacers, ICD’s including Bi-V ICD’s. I also now perform leadless device placement and that is what we are here to discuss today
