Between 60-90% of primary care visits are a result of stress. In this presentation, you will learn about how both acute and chronic stress affect the body and mind and what you can do to help yourself and your patients. These interventions can be used alone or in combination with medication and psychotherapy and will benefit physical and mental health.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
-Define stress and recognize signs, symptoms, and effects of stress in everyday life
-Identify the role of the relaxation response and mind-body practices, such as breathing, mindfulness, and brief yoga and movement on improving stress
-Learn techniques involving the mind, body, and breath that can help people experiencing both acute and chronic stress

Janis Freeman has been practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2010. She has experience in primary care and gastroenterology, and has spent the majority of her career working in small primary care clinics affiliated with Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, NY. Janis is a Diplomate of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, achieving board certification in Lifestyle Medicine in 2020. She is a member of the RN/APRN member interest group. She has taken several courses in Function Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine and is a member of Integrative Medicine for the Underserved. She served as Healing Arts Coordinator on the board of the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation from2020-2021.
In addition, she is a registered yoga teacher and owner of Growing Light Wellness and Yoga, LLC, providing private and group yoga and meditation instruction as well as health and wellness counseling and education. She has organized and led retreats focused on helping women manage stress and identify their strengths. Her recently published online course Leave Burnout Behind: Tools for a More Peaceful Life is available through Thinkific.com.
