Emerging trends in personalized risk prediction and long-term treatment planning will also be discussed, with a focus on optimizing patient outcomes and reducing fracture burden.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

1. Understand Osteoporosis: Describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis, including risk factors, causes, and its impact on bone density and fracture risk.
2. Recognize Prevention Strategies: Identify evidence-based lifestyle modifications and nutritional approaches (such as calcium and vitamin D intake, weight bearing exercise, and fall prevention) that help reduce the risk of osteoporosis
3. Review Diagnosis and Management: Explain current methods for diagnosing osteoporosis and outline common treatment options, including pharmacologic therapies and patient education strategies.

Sheila Acheson, DNP, FNP, ONP, CCD

Sheila Acheson, DNP, FNP-C, ONP-C, is a nurse practitioner with over 15 years of clinical experience in family medicine, internal medicine, and osteology, with the past nine years dedicated to bone health. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and advanced practice certifications from Duke University and is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist.
Dr. Acheson is the Founder and Director of the University of New Mexico Bone Health Program and Fracture Liaison Service (FLS). She serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where she provides bone health education for internal medicine and family medicine residents, as well as fellows in endocrinology and geriatrics.
Her professional passion centers on enhancing quality of life for older adults through proactive fracture prevention, optimizing mobility, and promoting safe, sustained physical activity. She is dedicated to advancing patient education and implementing evidence-based strategies that help individuals maintain independence and function across the lifespan.
