In 2017 AHA Guidelines had tweaked the treatment of hypertension once again.  It is important to keep abreast of the latest guidelines in caring for a patient with HTN.  Looking at different classes, ACEI, ARBS, Thiazides and Cal Channel blockers we will identify different populations and the most appropriate regimen.  Also, not forgetting the importance of lifestyle modification, we will explore case studies to see what the most potent options are in the treatment of hypertension.

  1. Utilize the 2017 ACC/AHA Blood Pressure Guidelines in adults to guide medication choices.
  2. Evaluate and compare different HTN pharmacologic agents in different populations.
  3. Understand the importance of non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of HTN.

Brett Badgley Snodgrass has been a Family Nurse Practitioner for 12 years, practicing in multiple settings including: family practice, urgent care, emergency departments, administration, chronic pain and palliative medicine. She is currently the Palliative Medicine Clinical Coordinator for the Baptist Healthcare System in Memphis, TN. Her primary focus is expansion of the palliative medicine program into other hospitals of the Baptist Healthcare System, as well as expanding the current program into the outpatient setting.

She is also the owner of BBS Health Education – where she creates and presents continuing education for healthcare providers, both live and online (BBSHealthEducation.com). She is a nationally recognized nurse practitioner speaker and teacher.  She is an award-winning healthcare blogger – The NP Mom. Brett Is a chronic pain expert, working for more than 20 years with chronic pain patients in a variety of settings. She has opened and directed two chronic pain practices. She is a sought after speaker on the subject of chronic pain and the Opioid Epidemic. She currently serves on the TN Chronic Pain Task Force. She is a director at large of the TN Pain Society. She also serves as a co-chair of the TN Access To Care Coalition.  She is board certified with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, where she is the past TN State Representative. She is also a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Brett received the 2015 AANP State Excellence Award for Tennessee for her work across the state on the TN Chronic Pain Task Force, as well as advocating for TN Full Practice Authority for Nurse Practitioners. She was also awarded the 2017 Memphis Business Journal Healthcare Hero Award.

Obtain Your Credits

To earn credits for this activity, you must complete all course components in the following order: 1) complete a three-question pre-test; 2) watch the course presentation video; 3) complete the course evaluation; 4) pass the post-test with a score of 2/3 (66.7%) or higher. You may retake the post-test until a passing score is achieved, at which point you will be able to view/print a copy of your certificate of completion.
