Description
Upper extremity pain and injuries are common. This presentation will assist the primary care and urgent care provider in understanding common pathology affecting the non-traumatic adult shoulder. Common pathologies will be discussed in detail such as rotator cuff tears, impingement, biceps tendonitis, & AC pathology. Common provocative physical exam techniques will also be addressed. We will also cover other pathology that can mimic shoulder pathology. Case studies, radiographs, and demonstrations will be used to enhance the learning process.

Learning Objectives
As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:
  1. Identify primary pathology that affects the shoulder of an adult patient
  2. Recognize shoulder diagnosis that can be treated by the primary care clinician vs those requiring urgent referral to specialist

Dr. Christopher Hemmer, DNP, ANP, ONP-C, FAANP

ANP, Piper Spine Care

Assistant Professor, Saint Louis University School of Nursing

Dr. Hemmer has been board certified as an adult nurse practitioner since 1999. He is also a board-certified orthopedic nurse practitioner and a fellow of the American Association of nurse practitioners. His area of specialty is in adult spinal disorders for the last 22 years. He currently evaluates new patients as well as established pre and post-operative patients. Chris has spent over nine years moonlighting in the emergency department in the past as well.

Dr. Hemmer started teaching as an adjunct for Saint Louis University in 2007. In the fall of 2013, Christopher accepted a full-time position with the school of nursing as an assistant professor for graduate students. He has co-taught several graduate-level courses over the years as well as performed as a guest lecturer during residency for the NP students. Chris has been receptive for several years to teaching in the clinical setting as a preceptor for NP students interested in spinal diseases and wanting to increase their radiology knowledge. Dr. Hemmer chairs a cadaveric CNE course yearly for spine specialists. Chris has presented various spine topics on the local, state, and national level over the years.

Dr. Hemmer research area is in vertebral compression fractures and osteoporosis. Specifically, the identification and management of fractures and osteoporosis in the adult population is a strong area of interest. 



Ruth Carrico, PhD, DNP, FNP-C, CIC, FSHEA, FNAP

Professor and FNP

University of Louisville School Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases

Ruth Carrico is a Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of Louisville School Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and director of epidemiological research in the University’s Center of Excellence for Research in Infectious Diseases (CERID).  Dr. Carrico has received training specific to healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). Dr. Carrico is responsible for the clinical and research operations at the University of Louisville Vaccine and International Travel clinic. Her research has been funded by the CDC, HRSA, DHS, and industry.

In 2008, Dr. Carrico was appointed to the National Biosurveillance Subcommittee (NBS) Advisory Committee to the Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in 2010 became a SHEA Fellow.  In 2011, Dr. Carrico was appointed by Secretary Sebelius, to the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) for an extended three-year term. In 2012, she was presented with the Carole DeMille Achievement Award by APIC, an honor for an Infection Preventionist.  In 2013, Dr. Carrico was appointed to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases as the Board’s Nurse Planner and in 2014 became a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow alumna.  Dr. Carrico served as the 2016 president of the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC), the organization responsible for board certification for infection preventionists worldwide and is now enjoying the role of immediate past president.  In 2016, Dr. Carrico co-founded the Infection Prevention Institute a virtual training site focusing on infection prevention education for all partners concerned with preventing infection in any setting.  Then, in 2017, the University of Louisville’s Journal of Refugee and Global Health was launched, with the first issue to be released in April.  Dr. Carrico serves as the Editor-in-Chief for this new open-access journal.  In 2018, Dr. Carrico assumed the position of president of the Kentucky Nurses Association and in 2020 was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow in the National Academies of Practice.  

Dinora Chinchilla, MD, MBA

Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor

UCI, Pulmonary and Critical Care

Dr Dinora Chinchilla grew up in East Los Angeles and completed her undergraduate degree at California State of Los Angeles. Dr Chinchilla is triple boarded in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care. She obtained her medical degree from UCI Medical Center and holds a Masters in Business Administration. She completed her 3-year residency training at Harbor UCLA Internal Medicine Program in Southern California and a fellowship in Pulmonary Critical Care at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. Currently, she is faculty at UCI Medical Center and holds the title of Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the Pulmonary Critical Care Division. Dr Chinchilla's clinical interests are in pulmonary vascular disease and is currently leading the implementation of the pulmonary embolism response team at UCI. In addition to her clinical interests, she is invested in mentoring aspiring physicians that will continue to improve healthcare delivery to the underserved latino population. 

Victoria (Tori) Garcia-Albea, MSN, CPNP, CDNP

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Lahey Clinic Dermatology

Victoria Garcia-Albea, NP is a pediatric nurse practitioner working at Lahey Clinic Dermatology in Burlington, MA.  She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with her BSN in 2003 and her MSN in 2006.  She then completed the Lahey Clinic Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program in 2007.  She worked at Lahey Dermatology from 2--7 until 2011. She then worked at Mystic Valley Dermatology in Stoneham, MA from 2011 until 2019.  In 2019 she returned to Lahey Clinic to take over as director of the Lahey Clinic Dermatology NP Fellowship Program.  She is in charge of the Lahey Dermatology Hair Loss Clinic and is the lead NP for the Lahey Clinic Hansen's Disease Program.

She has been married to the love of her life since 2008 and has 2 school-age boys. She enjoys her work immensely, but outside of work you can find her running, biking, hiking, rock climbing, and snowboarding. 

Leigh Ann Pansch, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC

Certified Dermatology Nurse Practitioner

Leigh Ann Pansch is a Certified Dermatology Nurse Practitioner practicing in Cincinnati, Ohio. Leigh Ann received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Thomas More University in Kentucky in 1997. She has worked in women’s health, pediatrics, and nursing education for the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where she was the first nurse to hold a joint faculty appointment. She completed her Master’s of Science in Nursing with a family medicine focus at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and Health in 2010. She is a National speaker on topics such as pediatric dermatology, melanoma, and psoriasis and enjoys educating hundreds of high school students yearly on sun safety. She is attentive to patient needs, enjoys getting to know her patients, and thrives on educating on diagnosis and treatment options which improves her outcomes. She has worked as a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner since 2010 in pediatric, private practice, and hospital settings. Leigh Ann is married with three daughters.

Neil Skolnik, M.D.

Dr. Neil Skolnik, MD, is an academic family physician who sees patients and teaches residents and medical students in the family medicine residency program at Abington Jefferson Health in Abington, Pennsylvania. He is a Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Abington Jefferson Health. Dr. Skolnik has written and edited 5 books:  On the Ledge: A Doctor’s Stories From the Inner City; Essential Practice Guidelines for Primary Care; Essential Infectious Disease Topics for Primary Care; Sexually Transmitted Diseases for Primary Care; and Electronic Medical Records: A Practical Guide for Primary Care. He was the series editor for fifteen years overseeing the development of over twenty-five titles in the Humana Press Current Clinical Practice in Primary Care series of medical textbooks and has published more than 300 articles, columns, poems, and essays in both the medical and lay literature on a diverse range of subjects including diabetes, asthma, COPD, hyperlipidemia, guideline-based medical care, technology in medicine, and the medical humanities. He served on the Expert Panel Report 4 (EPR-4) Working Group, National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Coordinating Committee, National Heart Lung Blood Institute (NHLBI), and is on the Primary Care Advisory Committee for the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Skolnik lectures nationally on a range of topics, with a special interest in diabetes, asthma, COPD, exercise in medicine, and coronary disease risk factor management. He also hosts and produces “Diabetes Core Update,” the American Diabetes Association’s official monthly podcast reviewing the most important new articles to come out in the diabetes literature every month, and hosts the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s guidelines podcast series. For the past year, he has co-hosted the weekly North American Continuing Education Covid Update. 

Charles P. Vega, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Chuck Vega grew up in Northern California and completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. He attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and completed residency training in Family Medicine at UC Irvine. He stayed on as faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at UCI and now holds the title of Health Sciences Clinical Professor. He is the Executive Director of UCI’s Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community and won a Macy Faculty Scholarship to improve patient-centered health education at UCI. He currently serves as Assistant Dean for Culture and Community Education in the UC Irvine School of Medicine. Dr. Vega has seen patients and taught medical students and residents at UC Irvine’s Family Health Center – Santa Ana for the past 20 years. This clinic is a federally-qualified health center and the largest safety-net clinic for Orange County. Dr. Vega’s academic interests are focused on access to quality, compassionate medical care for underserved populations, and the development of training programs to promote this vision of healthcare.
