NPs are frequently faced with ordering radiology tests for multiple reasons including shoulder pain, abdominal pain, and headaches. It can feel complicated and overwhelming to make a decision in clinical practice for the right test considering both cost and what will provide the best answer. This presentation will use a case study approach exploring patient examples which will provide learners with the ability to apply the information presented to their everyday practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Define radiology technology available today and describe the difference between plain films, ultrasounds, and scans
  2. Review the technology of plain films, ultrasound, CT scan with and without contrast, MRI with and without contrast, and PET scans
  3. Describe how to make a decision on which technology to utilize based on a patient
  4. Discuss the injuries or illnesses that can be diagnosed with each technology as well as the cost of each test

Her tenure as the president of the AANP gives her a unique and overarching perspective of the multifunctional role of the Nurse Practitioner. For the past 26 years, Angie has had her own practice—NP from Home, LLC—where she provides clinical services in a family practice and for the past 7 years a subspecialty obesity practice, NP Obesity Treatment Clinic

Angie has a great deal of experience in leadership positions and clinical practice. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and book chapters covering a range of health topics including health policy. She has presented nationally and internationally with an emphasis on health policy, leadership, and various clinical topics
