Functional Medicine for Suicide Prevention in a Primary Care Setting (Recorded Webinar)

Suicide is a public health issue of critical importance, one which merits our best, most focused efforts towards treatment and prevention, and stopping it at the primary care level is key. This webinar will introduce a biological framework for suicide prevention, one in which the concept of suicidality as the result of underlying nutritional, genetic, and psychosocial risk factors is explored. Scientific research supporting significant associations between malnutrition, essential fatty acid deficiencies, lithium deficiency, low cholesterol, and suicidality will be reviewed. Studies illustrating the benefits of targeted nutritional augmentation to mitigate risk factors will be presented; evidence-based interventions will be described, and a prevention model centered upon objective biologic measurement and a concept of biochemical individuality will be elucidated. Additionally, this on-demand webinar features an extended question and answer period following the main presentation.  This is an excellent opportunity to listen to some burning questions that our attendees of the live webinar asked and see what our expert speaker had to say.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Identify key nutritional, metabolic, and environmental factors associated with increased suicide risk, and how these factors represent therapeutic targets for functional interventions.
  2. Elucidate the nutritional essentiality of the mineral lithium, mechanisms through which lithium confers neuroprotection and affective stabilization, and clinical indicators of lithium deficiency that may invite functional intervention for mental health and suicide prevention.
  3. Describe how exogenous social and environmental factors interact with endogenous, biological factors to establish a continuum of suicide risk in susceptible individuals, and how a functional medicine approach to suicide prevention offers clinicians actionable stratagems for identifying and mitigating increased risk.
